Organist

Faith Lutheran Church (ELCA) in O’Fallon, Illinois is seeking an Organist. Faith Lutheran is a Christ centered church nourishing people and community through worship and music ministries and fellowship; early childhood education and adult learning; life transforming feeding programs and missional outreach. Our worship and music program is one of our most active programs with many active ensembles for children and adults: handbells, choir, brass, woodwinds, and Praise Band. Our music programs are active
primarily during the school year, with two culminating services annually, Readings and Carols (December) and our Music Sunday (May).

Responsibilities:

  1. Organist Duties
    • Provide organ music for all liturgical services.
      • two on each Ordinary Sunday
      • Festival services: Christmas Eve Services, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Services
    • Provide organ music for all liturgical services.
    • Accompany mid-week services during Advent and Lent.
      • Provide preludes, offertory, meditative music, and postludes as needed within the services. During the school year, many of our ensembles fill some of these musical roles at one or both services, each week.
      • Provide consultation and music for weddings and funerals, as needed. Compensation for these events is paid by the family/individual requesting them.
      • Collaborate with the Director of Music to schedule, supervise, and ensure the abilities of substitute and/or assistant organists and accompanists for any regularly scheduled worship services.
  2. Accompanist Duties
    • Prepare all parts and accompaniments for weekly rehearsals and performances for the Faith Singers and other ensembles as assigned.
    • Lead sectionals as requested by the director.
    • Accompany and/or play for special events throughout the year.
    • Accompany soloists and ensembles, vocal and instrumental, as requested at services with appropriate rehearsal times as scheduled
  3. Member of the Worship and Music Board and Church Staff Duties
    • Coordinate with the Worship and Music Director; and Worship & Music Board for care of the organ and church pianos.
    • Attend and participate in meetings, to include the Worship and Music Board Meetings, Hymn Selection Committee Meeting, and Music Staff Meetings, as requested.
    • Coordinate with the Worship and Music Director to catalog and maintain the Organ Music Library.
    • Work to build positive relationships with all constituents, church, and community members alike.
  4. Additional role or roles available alongside the Organist/Accompanist position (with additional hours and compensation), as desired:
    • Brass Ensemble (Triumphant Brass) Director
    • Woodwind Ensemble Director
  5. Job Qualifications & Requirements:
    • The ideal candidate will possess the following:
      • Education
        o Bachelor’s degree in Organ Performance or related field (or demonstrated equivalent experience).
        o Related professional certifications for organ and music (or willingness to obtain).
      • Experience
        o Two or more years of experience as an Organist in a church setting. Years of experience negotiable.
        o Excellent musicianship and technical skills in organ and piano.
        o Experience as an accompanist
      • Other Requirements
        o A background check is required prior to completion of the employment contract.
        o Mandated Reporter Training is required.
  6. Instruments
    • The Wicks 2 manual Pipe Organ, located in the front of the sanctuary, was custom built and installed in 1985, with additional digital package added in 2000, by the Wicks Organ Company, of St. Louis, Missouri. Specifications available upon request.
    • The sanctuary piano is Baldwin Baby Grand, tuned with the pipe organ.
      There are a number of other pianos located throughout the facility.
