Choir Director / Organist

St. Mark’s Lutheran Church is seeking a part-time Choir Director/Organist to provide instrumental accompaniment during worship and to direct the congregation’s 20 voice Chancel Choir and 4 octave Bell Choir. Located in the St. Louis suburb of Clayton, St. Mark’s has a strong musical tradition, with vibrant congregational singing, as well as choirs with high musical skill and extensive repertoires. The worship space is equipped with both piano and a two manual Ott pipe organ.

An ideal candidate would be an excellent keyboard musician (piano and organ); have exemplary verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills; have familiarity with current trends in liturgical practice; and thrive in a richly collaborative environment. The Music Director will work closely with the Pastor, the Worship Committee, and a talented group of volunteer musicians.

This position is part-time, with a commitment of 15-20 hours per week, including preparation and weekly rehearsal with the vocal and bell choirs during the program year. Additional time will be required for church holidays and festivals (e.g., midweek Lenten services, Holy Week, etc) as well as occasional services (e.g., funerals and weddings). Advanced training (either degreed or in-progress) is strongly preferred but not required. Experience directing a bell choir is desirable but not required.

Compensation for this position will be negotiated dependent upon skill and experience.
