Pro-Arte’s first concert of the 2015/16 season is entitled, “Ave Maria: A 500-Year Chronology of Marian Music.” The first half of the concert is devoted to rare and amazing works of the Middle Ages, and earlier. The seldom-heard eight-part Renaissance masterwork “Missa Alma Redemptoris Mater pro Octo”, by Spanish composer Tomás Luis de Victoria (c. 1548-1611), is a wonderful treat that will occupy the second half of the program. The title of this concert is taken from the Medieval hymn Vexilla Regis by Venantius Fortunatus (530-609), generally considered one of the greatest hymns of the liturgy. Fortunatus wrote it in honor of the arrival of a large relic of the True Cross which had been sent to Queen Radegunda by the Emperor Justin II and his Empress Sophia. Queen Radegunda had retired to a convent she had built near Poitiers and was seeking out relics for the church there.…

Gaude Maria - A celebration of Marian music The first half of our program spans over 500 years of music from Medieval chant to Renaissance masters like Eccard and Dufay including a Magnificat by a rarely heard English composer Henry Aldrich.  The centerpiece of the performance is Hans Leo Hassler's Motet Dixit Maria, and his Missa I super Dixit Maria.
