Music written by and for friends provides the common thread to this tapestry of music by Schubert, Holst and Rebecca Clarke. The Mass in G minor by Clarke's friend, Vaughan Williams, provides the framework for this program, which also features a world premiere from Latvian maestro, Eriks Esenvalds.

Seasonal cheer from the Emerald Isle flows from the pen of two influential Irish ‘Charles,’ Stanford and Wood, accompanied by timely carols arranged by John Rutter, Rhona Clarke, and Seóirse Bodley. A highlight will be a new County Kerry Carol written by Jonathan Dove for this concert, which culminates in the monumental Mater, Ora Filium of Arnold Bax.

The pairing of a Russian masterwork by Maximilian Steinberg with exotic motets by the Anglo-Polish composer Roxanna Panufnik is ideally suited to the resonant interior of this St. Louis landmark. Steinberg was the favorite pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov; this is the St. Louis premiere of Passion Week, completed and then suppressed by the Soviets in 1923.

Aspects of hope are explored in flower songs by Benjamin Britten, a quest for peace by Darius Milhaud, and Sears Roebuck cosmetic advertisements which were set to music by William Schuman. Past and present SLCC Composers-in-Residence are represented through Hope There Is by Clare Maclean and a new commission from Mårten Jansson.
