Pro Arte Saint Louis – Laetare Jerusalem
March 31 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm CDT
Pro-Arte Saint Louis, under the direction of Dr. Horst Buchholz, presents “Laetare Jerusalem”. The title of the program is taken from the Introit of the fourth Sunday of Lent, “Rejoice, Jerusalem, and all who love her. Be joyful, you that have been in sorrow.”
While the Lenten season reflects the passion of Christ, Laetare Sunday is considered an exception from the other Sundays. Pro-Arte will sing polyphonic settings of the proper parts of that day (Introit, Gradual, Offertory etc.) by composers like Heinrich Isaac, Scarlatti, and Palestrina. The ordinary parts of the mass will be chanted.
The second half of the program is dedicated to the feast of the Annunciation, which appears like a glimpse of Christmas during Lent. Pro-Arte will sing the magnificent Missa Ave Regina Coelorum by Spanish master Victoria, a work for double choir, interspersed with Gregorian chant for the Annunciation.
